In the Khojaly genocide, 613 people, including more than 100 women and 60 children, were killed. However, according to President Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan must look towards the future. He made these remarks during his speech at the opening ceremony of the 12th Global Baku Forum.
"We must establish peace in the South Caucasus," President Aliyev said, emphasizing that Azerbaijan is committed to the peace process and is, in fact, the author of the peace agreement. "We Fought for Our Dignity Based on International Law"
President Ilham Aliyev also highlighted that Azerbaijan fought for its dignity in line with international law. He recalled that the United Nations Security Council resolutions remained on paper for 27 years and stated that if Azerbaijan had not liberated its territories by force, the situation would have remained the same for another 27 years.
The head of state noted that, sometimes, the use of force is necessary to achieve peace and restore justice: "We see today how the European Union is changing its policy to build a stronger military potential. We see that some countries are spending their resources to strengthen their military potential and infrastructure. We have been doing this for at least 20 years – since 2005. Since then, we have built a strong army. That army liberated territories, ended separatism, and, as a result, the territorial integrity and sovereignty of our country were fully restored. This is not only a manifestation of the strong will of the Azerbaijani people but also a demonstration of international justice," President Aliyev added.
