At its investor meeting on Tuesday, Apple shareholders overwhelmingly voted against an anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) proposal brought forward by the conservative National Center for Public Policy Research. The proposal, one of four on the ballot, called on the tech giant to cease its D

The rejection of the proposal comes at a time when several major tech companies have been scaling back or eliminating their DEI programs amid mounting social and legal pressures. Notably, Meta has already dismantled its DEI initiatives, Amazon announced plans to curtail some efforts, and Google recently revealed it would abandon diversity hiring goals while reviewing its internal DEI strategies.

During the meeting, CEO Tim Cook addressed the issue, warning that "as the legal landscape around these issues evolves, we may need to make some changes to comply." Cook's comments underscored the ongoing debate over the role of DEI in corporate governance and the challenges companies face balancing social commitments with shifting regulatory environments.

The proposal, which gained national attention, was part of a broader trend of activist shareholder initiatives aimed at reshaping corporate policies. Despite these efforts, Apple’s board recommended that shareholders vote against the proposal—a recommendation that was ultimately followed by the majority of investors.

By rejecting the anti-DEI measure, Apple reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace, even as the broader tech industry navigates a complex landscape of political and legal challenges.
