Azerbaijan has called for closer political, economic and security ties among members of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS), urging greater regional unity, stronger coordination and a more prominent international role for the bloc.
Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov made the call at a meeting of the OTS Council of Foreign Ministers in Ankara on 29 October, during a working visit to Türkiye.
He also congratulated Türkiye and its people on the 103rd anniversary of the republic's founding.
Speaking against a backdrop of global conflicts, challenges to international law and weaknesses in the international security system, Bayramov stressed the need for mutual trust, shared interests and solidarity among Turkic states.
He outlined Azerbaijan's priorities as OTS chair, including deeper cooperation, the protection of shared historical and cultural heritage, stronger ties between member states and a more effective and internationally influential organisation.
Bayramov said these priorities had been reaffirmed at the OTS summit in Gabala in October 2025.
Bayramov highlighted efforts to deepen political and security cooperation, including closer defence industry ties.
Key initiatives included a meeting of Security Council secretaries in Baku and the adoption of a roadmap for 2027 covering joint defence production and technological cooperation.
On the economic front, he urged member states to strengthen trade, investment, transport links, energy, finance, digital development, innovation and emerging technologies.
He said closer cooperation in these areas would reinforce ties between Turkic states and help the organisation respond more effectively to new challenges.
Bayramov also highlighted efforts to protect the shared cultural and religious heritage of Turkic peoples while expanding humanitarian cooperation.
Among the initiatives he cited were Turkic World Week, held to mark the centenary of the First Turkological Congress, the first meeting of heads of state bodies responsible for religious affairs in Shusha, and the seventh meeting of the Council of Heads of Muslim Religious Administrations in Baku.
Turning to international diplomacy, Bayramov stressed the importance of joint efforts in New York to secure observer status for the OTS at the UN General Assembly.
Bayramov said the OTS+ format could open new avenues for cooperation with third countries and international organisations, helping the bloc expand its global partnerships.
However, he stressed that agreements must lead to concrete results, calling for effective implementation of decisions, sustained engagement by national institutions and closer coordination through the OTS Secretariat.
He urged the Secretariat to take a more active role in tracking progress and overseeing joint activities across member states.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Bayramov held talks with Türkiye's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
The two ministers discussed the current state of bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Türkiye, prospects for closer ties, cooperation within the OTS and other issues of mutual interest.
