Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan held talks in Tehran on Monday on bilateral ties and efforts to strengthen peace and security in the South Caucasus.
Mirzoyan arrived in the Iranian capital for an official visit and was expected to hold talks with several senior Iranian officials as part of ongoing consultations between the two neighbouring countries on bilateral and regional issues.
Ahead of the visit, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said discussions would focus on expanding bilateral relations and strengthening peace and security through regional cooperation in the South Caucasus.
Iran and Armenia maintain close diplomatic, economic and cultural ties, supported in part by the presence of an ethnic Armenian community in Iran.
Yerevan strongly condemned the Israel-U.S. military campaign against Iran and the strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in June.
Relations between Tehran and Yerevan have gained additional importance following the peace agreement signed by Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington in August 2025.
The deal included an agreement on developing the Zangezur transit route, a project closely watched by Iran because of its potential implications for regional transport links and borders.
Tehran has repeatedly said it supports a peaceful and lasting settlement of disputes in the South Caucasus. Iranian officials have also raised concerns that changes to regional transport arrangements could affect the country's land access to Europe through Armenia and Russia.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian paid a state visit to Armenia in August, while Armenian Defence Minister Suren Papikyan travelled to Tehran in February.
During Papikyan's visit, Pezeshkian said Iran was determined to finalise a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement with Armenia.
The latest talks in Tehran come as Iran seeks to deepen ties with its neighbours while maintaining its role in regional discussions on security, trade and transport connectivity in the South Caucasus.
