Azerbaijan has summoned Russia’s ambassador in Baku over recent Russian media comments it described as insulting, provocative and threatening towards the country, its people and leadership.

Azerbaijan summoned Russia's ambassador in Baku, Mikhail Yevdokimov, to the Foreign Ministry over recent statements in the Russian media and information space that Baku described as provocative, insulting and threatening.

The ministry said Azerbaijan's serious concern and firm protest were conveyed to the Russian side during the meeting. Baku said the statements targeted the Azerbaijani state, its people and the country's leadership.

According to the ministry, particular attention was drawn to comments about Azerbaijan and its leadership in a programme broadcast on 13 August as part of the “Chistota Ponimaniya” project.

Azerbaijan also referred to a programme broadcast on Sputnik radio on 7 August, including what the ministry called absurd claims about the alleged inclusion of the Azerbaijani leadership on Russia's list of terrorists and extremists. The ministry said further provocative remarks were also made on Spas TV on 16 August.

Baku stressed that discussions about possible interference in Azerbaijan's internal political processes and calls for physical violence against the Azerbaijani nation and leadership were unacceptable.

The Foreign Ministry said similar issues had already been raised by Azerbaijan at various political levels, but the continued use of such rhetoric, in an even harsher form, was a matter of serious concern.

“During the meeting, our expectation to take urgent and effective measures to end the provocations, threats, and violent rhetoric against Azerbaijan in the information and media space was once again conveyed to the Russian side,” the ministry said in a statement cited by APA.

Press Council condemns rhetoric

The development came as Azerbaijan's Press Council also condemned what it called inappropriate, threatening and insulting statements by some Russian media outlets directed against the Azerbaijani state, its people, leadership and prominent figures.

In a statement reported by Azertac, the council said such rhetoric was entirely contrary to the principles of civil journalism, ethical standards and human values.

The council said the Azerbaijani media had consistently shown sensitivity to issues concerning neighbouring countries, including Russia, while adhering to professional journalism standards.

It added that repeated incidents in the Russian media space caused “deep disappointment and justified dissatisfaction” among the Azerbaijani public.

The Press Council said such cases ran counter to the spirit of bilateral relations and media cooperation between Azerbaijan and Russia.

It called on the Russian media community and wider society to take decisive measures against incidents aimed at undermining Azerbaijani-Russian media cooperation and friendship between the two peoples.

The council reiterated that insulting opinions and threatening claims directed against the Azerbaijani state, its people and prominent figures were unacceptable and reminded those behind such statements that they bore legal responsibility for their actions.
