Türkiye and Syria discuss defence and security issues in Damascus

On Friday, a delegation from the Turkish National Defence Ministry paid an official visit to Damascus, the capital of Syria.

The delegation, led by Lieutenant General Ilkay Altindag, the ministry’s director general of defence and security, met with Major General Murhaf Abu Qasra, Syria’s defence minister, to discuss bilateral defence and security matters.

A statement posted on Türkiye’s social media platform NSosyal said the visit aimed to strengthen strategic cooperation between the neighbouring countries. Photos from the meetings were also shared in the post.

Since the departure of Bashar Assad in late 2024, Syria’s new government has been pursuing political and economic reforms, promoting social cohesion, and expanding cooperation with regional and international partners, with Türkiye being one of its key allies.

Assad, who led Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia last December, ending the Baath Party regime that had been in power since 1963. A new transitional administration, headed by Sharaa, was established in January.
