U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has ordered an Iranian delegation, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, to leave the United States after negotiations between Washington and Tehran stalled, according to a U.S. official.
The U.S. mission to the United Nations notified Iran's UN mission on Monday evening that Araghchi and his delegation were required to leave New York “immediately”, U.S. officials told Anadolu and Axios.
According to Axios, a U.S. official said the delegation had “overstayed their welcome”, arguing that with the UN General Assembly concluded, there was no reason for the Iranian officials to remain in New York.
The delegation reportedly left New York for Doha at about 1.20 am local time on Tuesday. Another source said Araghchi had already been due to return to Tehran that evening.
The departure came as diplomatic efforts to end the conflict appeared to lose momentum.
The White House had hoped for progress during talks on Monday morning, but by the afternoon it had become clear that negotiations had reached an impasse, according to Axios.
