Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, arrived in Damascus on Thursday, making history as the first head of state to visit Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
According to a statement from Qatar’s Emiri Diwan, Sheikh Tamim was greeted at Damascus airport by Syria's interim President, Ahmed al-Sharaa.
This marks the Qatari emir’s first visit to Syria in over 14 years and the first visit by any Arab or foreign leader since December 8, 2024.
Assad, who ruled Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia after opposition forces seized control of Damascus on December 8, bringing an end to the Baath Party’s rule, which had lasted since 1963.
