Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has announced that Italy will reopen its embassy in Tehran on Friday (19 June), marking a rare reversal in a period of heightened regional instability and disrupted diplomatic ties across the Middle East.
Speaking during parliamentary Question Time and cited by ANSA, Tajani said the ambassador, alongside Foreign Ministry staff, would return to Iran’s capital. Their return is a part of the reopening process following a temporary closure earlier this year amid escalating regional tensions.
He described recent U.S.-Iran understandings as an “encouraging development,” adding that there was a “glimmer of peace” in the Middle East that should not be wasted.
Tajani also confirmed planned talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, saying Italy stood ready to support efforts to turn the current understanding into a lasting agreement.
He stressed that restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz remained a strategic priority for European economies.
The reopening comes against the backdrop of widespread diplomatic disruption during the recent Iran-related security crisis. Multiple countries temporarily closed or scaled back their missions in Tehran and across the region.
Several Western governments, including Ireland, temporarily shut their embassies in Tehran citing security concerns, while others such as the Netherlands restricted public access to their diplomatic facilities during the peak of tensions.
The United States also evacuated diplomatic personnel from parts of the region as hostilities escalated.
