A massive blaze at a hypermarket in al-Kut, in eastern Iraq, has left at least 60 people dead and 11 missing, raising serious questions about safety standards and emergency response preparedness in the region.

“We have compiled a list of 59 victims whose identities have been confirmed, but one body was so badly burned that it has been extremely difficult to identify,”  a city health official told.

Ali al-Mayahi, a city official, added, “We have more bodies that have not been recovered still under fire debris.”

Rescue operations are ongoing, but the destruction has severely hampered recovery efforts.

Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the fire. However, initial findings from an investigation are expected to be made public within 48 hours, according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
