China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) announced Monday it will extend anti-dumping duties on specific stainless steel imports from the European Union, United Kingdom, South Korea, and Indonesia for an additional five years starting Tuesday, 1 July.
In a statement, the ministry said that removing the duties would "likely lead to continued harm to the domestic industry."
The decision follows a sunset review, a routine re-evaluation conducted before the existing five-year duties were due to expire.
Antidumping duties are additional import taxes imposed on goods that are being sold in a country at a price lower than their normal value in the exporting country's market.
Key Details
Products affected: Stainless steel billet and hot-rolled stainless steel plate.
Tariff range: 20.2% to 103.1%.
Duration: Another 5 years, starting 1 July , 2025.
Countries targeted: EU member states, UK, South Korea, Indonesia.
Market Impact
Stainless steel billet is a semi-finished product used to manufacture a variety of stainless steel items.
Hot-rolled stainless steel plate is commonly used in shipbuilding, railway, power infrastructure, and container manufacturing.
This move underscores China's continuing use of trade defence instruments amid ongoing global trade tensions, especially in the metals and manufacturing sectors. It also highlights Beijing’s intent to shield strategic industries from external pricing pressures as global steel markets remain volatile.
