Kazakhstan will establish regional water risk management headquarters to address growing water challenges during the vegetation season, the government announced following a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov.
The new headquarters will bring together local administrations, government agencies, and farmer associations to improve coordination on water supply, enforce irrigation schedules, and promote reuse of drainage water.
The initiative aims to enhance efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and interagency cooperation in water resource management.
Special attention is being given to Kazakhstan’s southern regions, which account for 97% of national water consumption. According to officials, more than 22,500 water supply contracts have already been signed with RSE Kazvodkhoz, surpassing last year’s number by 3,000.
Key reforms include:
- A differentiated subsidy system to promote water-saving technologies
- Reinforced measures against illegal water use
- Digital satellite monitoring of water usage
- Interactive maps highlighting water-deficient zones
The Ministry of Water Resources has also been directed to enhance cooperation with neighbouring countries on transboundary river management, ensuring sustainable use and conservation across borders.
