Kazakhstan plans to double container traffic on the Trans-Caspian route in three years, aiming to boost regional and transcontinental connectivity.
Speaking at the Central Asia–Italy summit in Astana, Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced the country’s plan to double container traffic along the Trans-Caspian international transport route within three years. Highlighting a 62% increase in container volume last year—reaching 4.5 million tons—Tokayev said the route is a modern revival of the ancient Silk Road.
He emphasized Kazakhstan’s ongoing investments in infrastructure, including port digitalization, new cargo terminals, and shipbuilding partnerships. With 80% of China-Europe land transport already passing through Kazakhstan, Tokayev invited Italy to actively support the route’s expansion and integration into the European transport network via the Global Gateway initiative. Italy has invested over $7.6 billion in Kazakhstan to date.
