Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on Monday expressed full backing for China’s initiative to set up a global artificial intelligence (AI) cooperation organisation, according to the presidential press service.
Chairing a meeting on AI development in the capital Astana, Tokayev said advanced technologies are a cornerstone of national independence and a key driver of economic growth, with AI offering vast opportunities.
Citing a United Nations Conference on Trade and Development forecast, he noted the global AI market could reach 4.8 trillion U.S. dollars by 2033, increasing its share in the global technology industry from 7 percent to 29 percent, calling it “an unprecedented growth.”
Referring to the Chinese proposal, first made in July, Tokayev said the aim is to “promote a multilateral approach to AI governance, narrow the digital divide, develop ethics and ensure the sustainable use of AI.” He stressed, “I believe Kazakhstan should support China’s proposal and take part in preparatory activities.”
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun described the plan as a practical move to advance multilateralism, meet the aspirations of the Global South and provide another “international public good” from China.
