Daybreak: 6 August 2026 Europe’s climate crisis, Ukraine and Hormuz talks

On 6 August, AnewZ's Daybreak focused on climate change across Europe, Ukraine’s shrinking air-defence supplies and diplomatic efforts surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

Climate pressure across Europe

The programme led with the growing impact of climate change across Europe, where extreme heat, drought and wildfires are increasingly affecting public health, energy production, transport systems and tourism. Italy placed all 27 cities in its national heat-monitoring system under the highest alert, while Austria recorded a national temperature record of 41.2°C. Low river levels have also disrupted shipping and electricity generation in parts of Central Europe.

Ukraine’s air-defence shortages

Daybreak also reported on Ukraine’s declining supplies of air-defence interceptors as Russia intensifies its missile and drone attacks. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine had received only about one-third as many anti-ballistic missiles from its allies in 2026 as it received during the previous year.

The shortage was highlighted during the latest Russian attack, when Ukrainian forces failed to intercept any of the 24 ballistic missiles and four Zircon cruise missiles launched by Moscow. Kyiv has urged its international partners to accelerate transfers from existing stockpiles and remove bureaucratic obstacles delaying deliveries.

Strait of Hormuz diplomacy

The programme also focused on diplomatic efforts to secure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband held talks in Washington, reaffirming their shared commitment to safe transit through the strategic waterway and to preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

The discussions came as Iran and Oman reported progress towards an agreement on a shipping route through the strait. Tehran said the two sides had agreed on the route’s geographical coordinates and were close to finalising a joint announcement, although questions surrounding control, transit conditions and possible fees remained unresolved.
