Azerbaijan has been elected Chair of the UN Environment Programme’s key decision-making body, marking a first for the country and strengthening its role in global environmental policy.
On June 24, Azerbaijan was elected Chair of the Bureau of the United Nations Environment Programme’s Committee of Permanent Representatives (UNEP CPR) for the first time. The Chairmanship will cover the years 2025 to 2027, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The UNEP CPR is the main permanent body of the UN Environment Assembly, consisting of 193 member states, which sets international priorities on environmental protection. The CPR Bureau plays a key role in preparing the Assembly’s decisions on global environmental policies and standards.
Azerbaijan will be represented in the Bureau by Sultan Hajiyev, its ambassador to Kenya and Permanent Representative to UNEP.
