Uzbekistan’s historic city of Samarkand has been declared the Cultural Capital of the Islamic World for 2025 by the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
ISESCO announced that the official celebrations for Samarkand's designation as the Cultural Capital of the Islamic World will begin Tuesday. The opening will feature an international conference titled “Spiritual Heritage and Cultural Expressions of the Islamic World,” focusing on calligraphy, music, poetry and solidarity.
High-ranking officials including culture ministers from member states and international representatives are expected to attend. ISESCO Director General Salim bin Muhammed al-Malik said the events will run for a full year and aim to highlight Samarkand’s historic contribution to Islamic civilization.
The celebration aligns with the 30th anniversary of ISESCO’s Cultural Capitals program. Events include Uzbek Culture Week in Rabat, international conferences on Central Asian scholars like Khwarezmi, Biruni and Ibn Sina, and cultural forums on arts, literature and Islamic architecture.
Samarkand, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, also received the title of World Tourism Capital in 2023.
