US authorities have launched an investigation into the deaths of Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife under circumstances deemed “suspicious enough” for further scrutiny, CNN reports.
The 95-year-old actor, his 65-year-old wife Betsy Arakawa, and their dog were found dead on Wednesday afternoon at their Santa Fe, New Mexico, residence.
The cause of death remains undetermined, with preliminary autopsies and officials finding no immediate signs of external trauma or foul play. Investigators have also ruled out carbon monoxide or natural gas exposure as possible causes.
According to the sheriff’s office affidavit for a search warrant, obtained by CNN affiliate KOAT, maintenance workers discovered their bodies just before 2 p.m. local time on Wednesday.
A 911 emergency call, also obtained by CNN, described the moment of discovery:
“They’re not moving,” the caller said. “Just send somebody out here really quick.”
