Banksy has returned with a mysterious new artwork—this time, possibly in France—and fans are buzzing with theories.

Elusive street artist Banksy revealed a new piece on Instagram: a traffic bollard casting a lighthouse-shaped shadow with the words "I want to be what you saw in me." The post lacked a caption or location, but geoguessers suspect it’s in Marseille, France.

Unlike Banksy’s usual politically charged work, this piece has sparked debate over its meaning—ranging from commentary on surveillance or loneliness to a more personal reflection on identity and perception.

The piece comes five months after Mother and Child, a modern take on Madonna and Child, and follows his 2023 Beastly London campaign of animal-themed street art. Meanwhile, Banksy’s market value remains sky-high: Mark Hoppus sold a Banksy work for €5.2 million this year, though the record sale remains 2021’s Love is in the Bin at £18.6 million.
