Denmark supports Ukraine's EU membership

Denmark announced it will continue backing Ukraine’s bid for European Union membership despite Hungary’s ongoing blockade, as it prepares to assume the presidency of the European Council on July 1.

Speaking at a press conference in Copenhagen on June 19, Danish Minister for European Affairs Marie Bjerre said Denmark plans to increase pressure on Hungary to allow progress while fully supporting Ukraine’s reform efforts.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has opposed NATO and EU military and financial aid to Ukraine, arguing that Kyiv’s EU accession could harm Hungary’s agricultural sector and broader economy.

Bjerre stressed that Ukraine has initiated necessary reforms and is ready to accelerate membership talks.

In addition to Ukraine, Denmark will prioritize reaching consensus among EU member states on the bloc’s ambitious 2040 climate goals during its presidency.
