Severe floods have devastated India’s northeastern Assam state, submerging villages and threatening endangered one-horned rhinos in a key wildlife sanctuary.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, more than 600,000 people across 21 districts have been affected. Over 1,500 villages are submerged, and nearly 14,740 hectares of crops have been damaged. The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, home to 107 one-horned rhinos, has also been flooded, with around 10 anti-poaching camps underwater. The sanctuary has the highest rhino density in the country, based on the 2022 rhino census.
