The Czech government has summoned China’s ambassador over a cyberattack it says targeted the foreign ministry’s communications during its 2022 EU presidency.

The Czech Republic has accused China of launching a "malicious cyber campaign" against its Foreign Affairs Ministry’s unclassified communications network.

According to Czech officials, the cyberattacks began during the country’s 2022 EU presidency and were carried out by the cyber espionage group APT31, which they say has been publicly linked to China’s Ministry of State Security.

Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky said a more secure communications system has since been put in place. He also confirmed that the Chinese ambassador was summoned to underline that “such hostile actions have serious consequences for our bilateral relations.”

China has denied the allegations, urging the Czech Republic to correct what it called “incorrect actions” and to stop engaging in “microphone diplomacy.”
