French President Emmanuel Macron is set to meet Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta to discuss strengthening defence cooperation and mining partnerships between the two countries.
The talks will focus on a planned defence letter of intent and cooperation on strategic military equipment such as fighter jets and submarines.
This meeting follows a recent $8.1 billion defence agreement signed in 2022, which included an order for 42 Rafale fighter jets and contracts for submarine development and ammunition. While no Rafale jets have been delivered yet, Indonesia expects the first six to arrive in early 2026. Additionally, Indonesia has agreements to purchase two Scorpene submarines and 13 long-range air surveillance radars from French companies.
Besides defence discussions, Macron’s delegation includes leaders from French mining company Eramet. They aim to explore cooperation related to Indonesia’s vast nickel resources, including mining permits and battery supply chain investments. Indonesia is the world’s largest nickel producer and holds the largest known reserves of the metal.
