In a dramatic and historic finish, Team USA captured its first gold medal at the IIHF World Championship in 92 years, defeating Switzerland 1-0 in sudden-death overtime on Sunday at Avicii Arena in Stockholm.
The game remained deadlocked through 60 minutes of regulation, despite several scoring chances, particularly from a dominant American offense that racked up 39 shots to Switzerland’s 24. It wasn’t until two minutes and two seconds into the overtime period—with each team reduced to three skaters and a goalie—that Tage Thompson broke the stalemate.
The forward picked up the puck in neutral ice, surged through the Swiss defense, and fired the winning goal past goaltender Leonardo Genoni, who had been stellar throughout the match.
“It’s huge,” said U.S. forward Drew O’Connor. “We know how long it’s been. We’ve been looking forward to finally trying to get it done, and I’m so excited that we did it with this group.”
Tactical and Tense Final
While the Americans had dazzled with attacking hockey in earlier rounds, the final unfolded as a tightly contested tactical battle. The Swiss defense held firm under pressure, with Genoni making multiple clutch saves, including a second-period penalty shot from Conor Garland following a hooking call on Swiss defenseman Michael Fora.
Despite sustained pressure, Team USA couldn’t break through in regulation. Frank Nazar nearly ended the game in the dying seconds of the third period with a spinning shot, but again Genoni was equal to the task.
Overtime provided a clean slate. After a few tense Swiss possessions, Thompson’s individual brilliance ended the game and sealed Team USA’s first world title since 1933, sparking euphoric celebrations on the ice and on the bench.
“You get to three-on-three, you never really know what’s going to happen,” O’Connor added. “So it felt awesome that he [Thompson] put that in. We were all so excited.”
