President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he believes Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to end the war in Ukraine, even as missile strikes continue across the country.
In an interview with ABC News, Trump said, “I think he does,” when asked if Putin seeks peace. He added, “If it weren’t for me, I think he’d want to take over the whole country.”
Trump also expressed disapproval of recent Russian strikes. “I was not happy when I saw Putin shooting missiles into a few towns and cities,” he said.
The comments come as Kyiv endures renewed attacks and the conflict approaches its fourth year. Trump has positioned himself as a potential broker of peace, repeatedly claiming the war would end quickly under his leadership.
Putin has not publicly shifted course, despite intermittent signals from Moscow suggesting openness to talks. Kyiv remains sceptical, demanding a full withdrawal of Russian forces.
