Donald Trump said talks between his envoy and Vladimir Putin made major progress toward ending the Ukraine war, urging Kyiv and Moscow to meet face-to-face.
U.S. President Donald Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin for three hours in Moscow to discuss the U.S. plan to end the war in Ukraine, with Trump later saying the two sides were “very close to a deal,” despite lingering differences.
In a social media post following Witkoff’s meeting, Trump described it as a good day of talks and called for a high-level meeting between Kyiv and Moscow to finalize an agreement.
"Most of the major points are agreed to," Trump wrote after landing in Rome for the funeral of Pope Francis on Saturday, adding, "Stop the bloodshed, NOW."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiyy was also expected to attend the funeral, though he said he was unsure if he could make it.
Russia and Ukraine have not held direct negotiations since the early weeks of the war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
