South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said he spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss ending the Ukraine war and improving strained bilateral ties, amid rising tensions following Trump’s return to office and policy disagreements.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on social media platform X that he spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday. Their conversation focused on ending the war in Ukraine and improving strained U.S.-South Africa relations. Ramaphosa stated that both leaders agreed on the urgency of halting the conflict and planned to meet soon to address key issues in their bilateral ties.

Tensions between the two countries have worsened since Trump returned to office in January. His administration expelled South Africa’s ambassador and slashed financial aid, criticizing South Africa’s stance on land reform and its legal action against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
