India closes land border crossing with Pakistan following Kashmir attack

India on Thursday sealed the Attari-Wagah border crossing—its sole land link with Pakistan—after a militant attack in Kashmir left 26 tourists dead earlier this week.

India on Thursday closed the Attari–Wagah crossing, its only land route for passengers and most bilateral trade with Pakistan, in the wake of the militant assault in Kashmir that killed 26 tourists earlier this week.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said the shutdown takes effect “immediately and until further notice” as part of a wider package that also includes suspending the Indus Water Treaty and downgrading diplomatic ties. The daily flag-lowering ceremony at the frontier has been halted, and hundreds of trucks that normally move fertiliser, chemicals and perishables each month are stranded.

Islamabad denies any role in the attack, pointing to a little-known group, Kashmir Resistance, that has claimed responsibility. Pakistan’s National Security Committee will meet to craft a response, while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has convened an all-party session to consider further steps.
