Local media reports suggest the attackers, disguised in fake military gear, were members of a criminal gang targeting rivals at the cockfight. During the raids, authorities seized weapons and replica police and army uniforms in the northwestern Manabí province.
Provincial authorities have launched a criminal investigation. Up to 20 criminal gangs are believed to be active in Ecuador, competing for control of major drug trafficking routes.
