Hungary and Poland warn of escalating risks in the Ukraine war as Russia lowers its nuclear threshold and launches missile strikes, signalling a critical phase in the conflict.
Hungary's and Poland's prime ministers separately warned of rising risks from the war in Ukraine on Friday (November 22) following missile strikes by both Russia and Ukraine this week.
Russia fired a hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile at the Ukrainian city of Dnipro on Thursday (November 21) in response to the U.S. and UK allowing Kyiv to strike Russian territory with advanced Western weapons.
On Tuesday (November 19) Russian President Vladimir Putin lowered the threshold for a nuclear strike, expanding its potential use in response to a wider range of conventional attacks.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Russia's moves should be taken seriously and Europeans should adopt "a wartime logic" in dealing with Moscow.
Poland's Donald Tusk said recent events showed that there was a real risk of a global conflict breaking out and the war in Ukraine was entering a "decisive phase".
