The United States has strongly condemned China’s recent military maneuvers near Taiwan, describing them as “irresponsible threats” that only serve to heighten regional tensions. The remarks were made by a spokesperson from the American Institute in Taiwan, the de facto U.S. embassy in Taipei, in a statement released on Tuesday.
According to the spokesperson, China's growing military pressure and intimidation tactics are not only reckless but also counterproductive, exacerbating the already fragile situation across the Taiwan Strait. The statement further emphasized that China’s actions are undermining the prospects for peace and stability in the region.
“China’s escalating military intimidation tactics only serve to exacerbate tensions and undermine cross-Strait peace and stability,” the spokesperson stated. “Once again, China has shown that it is not a responsible actor and has no problem putting the region’s security and prosperity at risk.”
The U.S. also reiterated its unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan, a self-governed island that Beijing considers part of its territory. Washington has long maintained that it will continue to provide the necessary assistance to ensure Taiwan’s defense against any form of coercion or aggression.
This latest round of condemnation comes amid increasing concern over China's recent military exercises near Taiwan, which many experts fear could be a precursor to more aggressive actions. While Beijing has denied any aggressive intent, it continues to assert its sovereignty over Taiwan, despite the island’s insistence on its autonomy.
The U.S. has consistently maintained that it opposes any unilateral attempts to alter the status quo across the Taiwan Strait and has called for dialogue and peaceful resolution of differences. However, Washington has also made it clear that it will stand by Taiwan in the face of Chinese military threats.
As tensions rise, the international community remains concerned about the potential for conflict in the region. The United States has called on China to refrain from further provocative actions and to prioritize dialogue in the interest of regional peace and stability.
