A magnitude 7 earthquake struck Tonga on Sunday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The quake occurred at a depth of 16 km (10 miles), having initially been reported as magnitude 6.6.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning System stated that hazardous tsunami waves could be possible within 300 km of the epicentre along Tonga’s coastline.
Tonga, a Polynesian kingdom in the South Pacific, consists of over 170 islands.
