A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar’s Sagaing region, followed by a 6.4-magnitude tremor, killing more than 1,700 people and leaving 3,400 injured. The quake caused building collapses in Myanmar and Thailand, prompting emergency declarations and ongoing rescue efforts.

More than 1,700 people were killed in Myanmar after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar’s Sagaing region on Friday. A second 6.4-magnitude tremor followed 12 minutes later, according to the US Geological Survey.

At least nine people were killed in neighbouring Thailand, where the 7.7 magnitude quake rattled buildings and brought down a skyscraper under construction in the capital Bangkok, trapping 30 people under debris, with 49 missing.

The U.S. Geological Service's predictive modelling estimated the death toll could exceed 10,000 in Myanmar and that losses could exceed the country's annual economic output.

In Myanmar, a monastery in Taungoo city collapsed, killing five displaced children, while at least 20 people died at Shwe Pho Shing Mosque in Mandalay during Friday prayers. Rescue efforts are ongoing.

The historic Ava Bridge in Mandalay collapsed, and Mandalay Palace was damaged. Myanmar’s National Disaster Management Committee declared a state of emergency in several regions, while Thai authorities designated Bangkok an “emergency zone.”

The Stock Exchange of Thailand halted trading, and a major hospital in Nay Pyi Taw received numerous casualties. The tremors, at a 10-kilometer depth, disrupted mobile networks and caused widespread damage, with shocks felt in neighboring countries.
