Brazil’s top court has ruled that former President Jair Bolsonaro must face trial for allegedly attempting to overturn the 2022 election.
Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro will stand trial for allegedly attempting to stage a coup against current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, following a ruling by the country’s top court.
A majority of justices on Brazil’s Supreme Court voted in favor of trying Bolsonaro for allegedly conspiring to overthrow the government after losing the 2022 election.
The Supreme Court began reviewing charges against Bolsonaro and seven of his closest allies on Tuesday in a session that Bolsonaro attended voluntarily.
If convicted in a trial expected later this year, Bolsonaro could face a prison sentence exceeding two decades.
Bolsonaro has denied the charges, claiming he is the victim of “political persecution” aimed at preventing him from running again in the 2026 presidential election.
