Stephen Orlins, president of the National Committee on United States-China Relations (NCUSCR), stated that China and the United States should cooperate in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) to avoid duplicating efforts.
Orlins, who participated in the annual China Development Forum in Beijing, emphasized the importance of collaboration in AI development to benefit both countries and global progress.
In remarks to reporters, shared through a video posted by Financial News, which is owned by China’s central bank, Orlins noted that while AI has become a focal point of competition between the two nations, a cooperative approach could help maximize the potential of the technology.
AI has increasingly become a point of contention in U.S.-China relations, particularly as Washington has imposed several rounds of sanctions targeting China’s AI and semiconductor industries. These actions, aimed at slowing China’s technological advances, are partly driven by concerns over military applications of AI and related technologies.
The NCUSCR, a non-profit advisory body, works to foster better understanding and cooperation between the two countries, despite the growing tensions in areas such as trade, technology, and security.
