Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a telephone conversation with the United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, on Saturday at the US initiative.
Marco Rubio informed Sergey Lavrov of the U.S. decision to launch a military operation against the Houthis in the Red Sea and "emphasized that continued Houthi attacks on U.S. military and commercial shipping vessels in the Red Sea will not be tolerated."
Lavrov urged an immediate ceasefire and political dialogue to prevent further bloodshed, Russian Foreign ministry said in statement released on Sunday.
According to a statement by the U.S. State Department, Rubio and Lavrov discussed steps to restore contacts between the U.S. and Russia.
"Secretary Rubio and Foreign Minister Lavrov discussed next steps to follow up on recent meetings in Saudi Arabia and agreed to continue working towards restoring communication between the United States and Russia," State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said in a statement.
