Mark Carney is Canada’s new prime minister, taking office amid a trade war with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Economist and political newcomer Mark Carney has been sworn in as Canada’s new prime minister, replacing Justin Trudeau, who served for nine years.
The 59-year-old takes office amid an ongoing trade war with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has threatened tariffs that could severely impact the Canadian economy.
Carney has reshaped his 24-person cabinet, cutting nearly half the ministerial positions inherited from Trudeau, with a focus on handling relations with Washington.
The new prime minister has pledged to take a different approach in dealing with Trump than his predecessor. While he stated he had no immediate plans to speak with the U.S. president, he firmly rejected any suggestion of annexation, declaring that Canada “will never, ever in any way, shape, or form be part of the United States.”
