Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed in principle to a 30-day ceasefire proposal from U.S. President Donald Trump, aimed at reducing hostilities in Ukraine. While the ceasefire presents a potential opportunity for peace talks and humanitarian aid, the terms are still under negotiation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he agrees with the proposal for a ceasefire with Ukraine but emphasized that it should lead to an "enduring peace." Speaking after a meeting with his Belarusian counterpart in Moscow, Putin stated that any peace deal must address the underlying causes of the crisis.

Putin also raised questions about the terms of the ceasefire, including how violations would be determined and who would be responsible for enforcing the agreement. He suggested that negotiations with American partners are necessary to clarify these details.

The ceasefire proposal was initially accepted by Kyiv during U.S.-Ukraine talks in Jeddah on Tuesday, where both sides agreed to a 30-day truce. Putin’s comments come as U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff is reportedly in Moscow for discussions with Russian officials about the ongoing war in Ukraine.

"We agree with the proposals to stop military actions, but our position is that this cessation should lead to long-term peace and address the root causes of the crisis," Putin stated. "The idea itself is good, and we certainly support it. But there are issues that we must discuss. I think we need to talk to our American colleagues and partners about this. Maybe we should call President Trump and discuss it together."
