U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is engaged in serious discussions with Russia to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.
“Hopefully they’ll do the right thing,” Trump told reporters during an Oval Office meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
Trump dismissed concerns about the potential for Russia to attack U.S. allies, saying, "It's not going to happen. We'll make sure it doesn't happen."
Witkoff was set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday night, according to a report from Politico, citing Russian state-owned news outlet Izvestia.
The meeting comes as Washington pushes for a 30-day ceasefire proposal that Ukraine has agreed to, with pressure now on Moscow to respond.
