U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that talks on Gaza were progressing but gave few details. With the first phase of the ceasefire set to expire in two days, Israel is sending negotiators to Cairo to discuss an extension.
The three-phase ceasefire, which began on January 19, has so far resulted in the release of 33 Israeli hostages and around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. However, both Israel and Hamas have accused each other of violating the agreement.
When asked whether phase two of the ceasefire would proceed, Trump said, “We’ll see what happens. Nobody really knows.” He made the remarks alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who reiterated support for a two-state solution as the path to lasting peace.
The United Nations has described the conditions of released detainees and hostages as distressing, reflecting the dire humanitarian situation. Meanwhile, Trump’s proposal for a U.S. takeover of Gaza and the displacement of Palestinians has drawn global condemnation.
Since October 2023, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has killed over 48,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza health ministry. The conflict erupted when Hamas launched an attack on Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostages.
