Rose Girone, believed to be the oldest known Holocaust survivor, has died at 110. Her passing was confirmed by her family and the Claims Conference, a Jewish organization securing compensation for Holocaust survivors.
Girone, who endured Nazi persecution during World War II, passed away on Monday at a nursing home in Bellmore, New York, according to CNN. She was eight months pregnant when her husband was arrested and sent to Buchenwald concentration camp, the Claims Conference said in a social media post.
After his release, the family fled Breslau, Germany, and resettled in Shanghai, where they survived the war. Her daughter, Holocaust survivor Reha Bennicasa, described her as "a strong lady, resilient," recalling her mother’s wisdom and practical approach to life.
Approximately 245,000 Holocaust survivors are still alive today, with around 14,000 residing in New York, the Claims Conference estimates.
