Severe snowfall sweeps across Japan’s central regions

Heavy snowfall hit central Japan as a cold front swept through, prompting weather warnings and disrupting daily life.

Japan faced heavy snowfall on Wednesday, as a powerful cold front gripped the country's central areas.

Niigata Prefecture, already buried under more than three meters of snow this season, saw roads and buildings coated in fresh accumulation.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a heavy snow advisory, warning that up to 70 cm  of snowfall could hit coastal regions along the Sea of Japan within 24 hours.

Forecasters expect the wintry conditions to peak on Wednesday, with temperatures set to rise heading into next week.
