The UK government has imposed new sanctions on a Russian cyber group, ZSERVERS, for its role in global ransomware attacks.
The government's statement identifies ZSERVERS as a key player in supporting these attacks and also targets six of its members who are part of a larger cybercrime network. These sanctions aim to combat the threat posed by these attacks, which disrupt essential services, compromise data, and have generated significant illicit profits.
"We must counter their actions at every opportunity to safeguard the UK’s national security and deliver on our Plan for Change," Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated.
The UK government reports that these attacks generated "$1 billion from their victims globally in 2023 alone.
