Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that any peace plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump must not only stop the war but also ensure lasting security against future Russian aggression. Speaking in an interview, he stressed the need for firm guarantees to avoid a repeat of past fai
In an interview broadcast on Sunday, Volodymyr Zelensky told ITV that a frozen conflict would only lead to renewed hostilities, stressing that a sustainable resolution must prevent further military action. He emphasised that a lasting peace should ensure Russian President Vladimir Putin has no chance to wage war again.
Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated his openness to negotiations but maintained that Ukraine’s Western allies—the United States and the European Union—must be involved. He said security assurances from these partners were essential for meaningful discussions.
"If I had an understanding that America and Europe will not abandon us and they will support us and provide security guarantees, I would be ready for any format for talks," he stated, adding that a clear roadmap was needed for how the war would conclude.
Regarding Ukraine’s internal situation, Zelensky again ruled out holding elections while hostilities continued, citing martial law provisions. He argued that lifting these measures could impact military capability and morale. The Kremlin, meanwhile, has questioned his legitimacy beyond his original mandate.
The Ukrainian leader also recently told Reuters that he hoped for a strategic partnership with Washington, proposing the supply of rare earth minerals in exchange for financial support. Meanwhile, U.S. and Ukrainian officials have engaged in discussions with Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg.
Trump has indicated he may meet Volodymyr Zelensky next week to discuss potential solutions. The New York Post reported that Donald Trump had spoken to Putin about ending the war, but Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he could neither confirm nor deny the claim.
