Climate activist Greta Thunberg joined high school students protesting outside a school in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis on Tuesday, as a wave of student demonstrations continues across France.

Thunberg visited Paul-Éluard high school to show support for students taking part in the blockade movement. She joined protesters ahead of a planned march later on Tuesday.

The demonstrations have been taking place across France for around three weeks, with students calling for better conditions, more staff and increased funding for schools.

Shooting at school near Marseille

The protests come amid heightened attention on security in French schools after a separate shooting at a middle school near Marseille on Monday.

A 14-year-old pupil shot and wounded two teachers at Joseph Lakanal middle school in Aubagne with a hunting rifle that had been hidden in a guitar case, according to officials.

A school supervisor disarmed the pupil before police arrived. The school’s head teacher and another teacher were taken to hospital, but their injuries were not life-threatening.

The Marseille prosecutor’s office opened an investigation into attempted murder. Authorities said there was no immediate indication of a link between the shooting and the wider student protests.

Macron condemns violence

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence surrounding recent school protests and expressed his support for the teachers, students and their families following the shooting.

“I salute the composure and exemplary response of the educational team, which made it possible to avoid the worst,” Macron said on X.

The pupil was later detained by police. Investigators said there were no immediate clues about a possible motive.

Police union spokesperson Eddy Sid told BFM TV that there was no apparent connection between the shooting and protests over understaffing and a lack of funding.

There had been no blockade at the Joseph Lakanal school on the day of the shooting.
