International cooperation, lunar exploration and the growing role of artificial intelligence dominated the third day of a major astronautical conference now underway in Antalya.
Astronauts, space-agency officials, researchers, and private-sector executives met Wednesday at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) to discuss subjects ranging from future Mars missions and increasingly crowded orbits to good governance in the space age.
According to organisers, the five-day event – held under the banner “The World Needs More Space” – has drawn 7,500 registered delegates from more than 100 countries.
Speaking at the event, Gabriella Arrigo, head of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF), said the organisation seeks to keep channels of dialogue open despite geopolitical divisions, technological competition, and the growing number of private companies entering the burgeoning space sector.
Wednesday’s program included the fifth annual meeting of countries participating in the Artemis Accords, a U.S.-led framework that lays down principles for the peaceful, transparent and sustainable exploration of the moon and other celestial bodies.
The non-binding accords address matters such as scientific data-sharing, interoperability, emergency assistance and the avoidance of harmful interference during space operations.
Since it was established in 2020, more than 75 countries have signed on to the framework.
Other discussions examined the potential use of artificial intelligence during Mars missions, next-generation space infrastructure, and legal questions pertaining to the construction of space stations, planetary defence and commercial activity in low-earth orbit.
Wednesday also saw the IAF sign an agreement with Japan’s Aerospace Exploration Agency setting out an initial framework for Japan to host the Global Space Exploration Conference in the summer of 2028.
Türkiye’s expanding space ambitions were also on the agenda.
Turkish Space Agency head Yusuf Kirac said Ankara hopes to build on an existing satellite project with members of the Organisation of Turkic States and eventually produce a jointly built space module.
Türkiye, which became the 71st signatory to the Artemis Accords in August, is hosting the annual space congress for the first time, while Turkish participants account for more than 1,000 registered delegates.
The congress is slated to continue through Friday, when the venue will open to the general public.
