Space-agency chiefs and industry leaders met to discuss lunar exploration, satellite networks and orbital security on Tuesday as a major global space congress entered its second day.
The 77th International Astronautical Congress brings together almost 7,000 delegates from 108 countries at the NEST Convention Centre in Antalya’s Belek resort district.
Tuesday’s program included the third Global Space Leaders Summit, a closed-door gathering of senior representatives from established and emerging space-bound nations.
Discussions focused on international partnerships, responsible governance, and strategic challenges arising from the rapid commercialization of space.
Other sessions examined lessons gleaned from NASA’s Artemis II mission, the future of large satellite constellations, and the growing overlap between commercial innovation and geopolitical competition.
Artemis II carried four astronauts around the moon in April, completing the first manned lunar flyby in more than five decades.
Türkiye’s burgeoning space program, too, featured prominently in Tuesday’s discussions.
Turkish defence firm Aselsan announced plans to launch the first satellite in its Astralink low-earth-orbit communications constellation within two years.
The company says the proposed network would eventually comprise almost 200 satellites linking more than a million ground terminals.
Speaking at the congress Tuesday, Arif Karabeyoglu, a Turkish Space Agency board member, discussed construction of a planned Turkish-run spaceport in Somalia.
According to officials, the planned spaceport’s proximity to the equator will afford technical advantages for satellite launches and provide Türkiye with greater access to orbit.
Mehmet Fatih Kacir, Turkish industry and technology minister, held separate talks pertaining to space exploration with officials from Spain, Luxembourg, the United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan.
In a subsequent statement, Kacir said the meetings had tackled potential cooperation in technology, industry, innovation and entrepreneurship, but announced no signed agreements.
The congress opened Monday with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirming that production of Türkiye’s first lunar spacecraft had been built and assembled for a launch slated for 2027.
Organised annually by the International Astronautical Federation, the congress is being hosted by Türkiye for the first time.
The event will continue through Friday with a number of further discussions planned pertaining to lunar exploration, artificial intelligence, commercial spaceflight, and orbital sustainability.
