The United States has withdrawn all 12 of its B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford in Britain, just a week after several people were arrested over an alleged plot targeting the air base.

The Pentagon confirmed the aircraft had returned to their home stations in the U.S., citing operational security concerns.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were “strong indications” that Iran was linked to the suspected plot, although Tehran has rejected the allegation as baseless.

U.S. President Donald Trump said those behind the alleged plot had planned “big damage”, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested the involvement of a “foreign actor”.

Iran rejects allegations

Iran has denied any role in the suspected plot and summoned Britain’s ambassador in Tehran to protest against the accusations.

The UK had allowed U.S. bombers at Fairford to support strikes against Iranian missile sites targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz, placing the base in a more prominent role amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.
