A major bridge across the Dnipro river in Kyiv was hit in a Russian air attack on Saturday, the city's mayor, Vitali Klitschko said, as strikes on the capital's infrastructure continue.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko said traffic from the east bank to the west was suspended due to damage to the road surface and trolleybus cables on the Northern Bridge. No casualties were reported. Ukrainian newspaper, The Kyiv Post, reported that a jet-powered strike drone caused the damage.

It is the third straight day Russia has targeted the city's key bridges. Kyiv’s Southern Bridge was struck several times in the past two days, forcing the temporary suspension of traffic across it and two other bridges.

In Ukraine's eastern Luhansk region, two people were killed and three sustained injured in drone attacks, the Russian-appointed head of the region said on Saturday.

In Belgorod, western Russia, one person was killed in a Ukrainian strike, Russian state news agency TASS reported. Another two people were wounded in the same attack, TASS said.

U.S.-Ukrainian fund seals minerals deal

Separately, a joint U.S.-Ukrainian reconstruction fund has announced its first critical minerals deal and four other projects, a senior U.S. official said.

Conor Coleman of the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation said the projects total about $70 million. Roughly $30 million will go into a joint platform with Ukrainian private investment firm BGV Group, targeting early-stage mining of rare earths, uranium, beryllium and zirconium.

Two other projects aim to shore up power and heating networks, including a battery system backed by nearly $100 million in debt financing provided by U.S. government development finance to the energy company DTEK. It is designed to provide up to two hours of backup power to about 600,000 homes.

Meanwhile, European Commissioner Hadja Lahbib called on Russia to provide humanitarian assistance to civilians in the occupied town of Oleshky, southern Ukraine, describing conditions there as “appalling”.

“Civilians are trapped under siege by Russian forces without access to food, medicine, clean water and basic care. This is unacceptable,” Lahbib said.

On Monday, the Governor of Ukraine’s Kherson region, Oleksandr Prokudin, said that the Ukrainian military was delivering food and medicine via drones to the town, as the humanitarian situation worsened.

Oleshky, a frontline town on the Dnipro River, which separates Russian and Ukrainian forces, has been under Russian occupation since 2022.
