As the Ukraine war is highlighted by some leaders during the United Nations' 81st General Assembly meeting in New York, Russian forces attacked the Ukrainian capital Kyiv early on Thursday with ballistic missiles, killing two people and injuring six, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.
Poland’s military said it had ended air operations launched to protect the country’s airspace during Russian strikes on targets in Ukraine.
The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said no violation of Polish airspace had been detected.
It added that the military continued to monitor developments in Ukraine and remained ready to protect Polish airspace.
Zelenskyy said Kyiv had already faced three waves of ballistic attacks by the time of the meeting, arguing that Patriot interceptors remained the only effective option currently available to Ukraine against ballistic missiles.
He added that Ukraine had made progress in countering cruise missiles, drones and jet-powered Shahed drones.
Iranian and Ukrainian foreign ministers met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Thursday, Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency reported.
The talks marked their first such meeting since tensions escalated in July following a Ukrainian attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, according to Reuters.
No further details about the discussions were immediately available.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned that inviting Russian President Vladimir Putin to December’s G20 meeting in Miami could encourage Moscow to continue its aggression against Ukraine.
“If inviting Putin to the G20 could bring us closer to a just peace, I would be absolutely in favour of it,” Tusk said. “However… Russia might well view it as an encouragement to continue its aggressive policies.”
The Kremlin said it would consider the invitation.
Polish municipalities should prepare evacuation plans in case of an attack, Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński said, warning of possible further Russian provocations near the country’s border.
Kierwiński said Poland had also prepared contingency plans at the national level and warned that Russian aircraft could attempt to cross the Polish border before such incidents were described as “accidental”.
Poland placed six border crossings with Ukraine on heightened alert earlier this week following Russian drone attacks near the border.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv was “very open” to Türkiye hosting a trilateral leaders’ meeting aimed at advancing peace negotiations.
Speaking after talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in New York, Zelenskyy said Erdoğan had expressed readiness to host such a summit and that Ukraine would be prepared to attend.
The two leaders also discussed a potential ceasefire or truce in the Black Sea, maritime and food security, as well as bilateral trade.
Russia has extended an official invitation to visit the country to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, a deputy foreign minister said on Thursday, according to the TASS state news agency.
Moscow and Pyongyang have drawn markedly closer in recent years, with North Korea sending troops to fight alongside Russian forces in Ukraine in 2024 and deepening military cooperation under a mutual defence pact.
The Kremlin said that it viewed the European Union's decision to transfer revenue from frozen Russian assets to Ukraine as illegal and a form of theft.
In August, the European Commission said the bloc would give Kyiv €1.4 billion ($1.6 billion) taken from interest on cash balances, part of Russian central bank assets frozen by the EU because of the war in Ukraine.
The Kremlin said on Thursday that no decision had been taken yet on a possible summit in December between Russian and U.S. Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, and that it was premature to discuss the agenda.
The United States invited Putin to a December G20 meeting in Miami, Florida where he could hold a summit with Trump, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Russia valued the invitation and would decide on its response.
Czech JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets were scrambled overnight for a combat air patrol over Poland, the Czech army said on Thursday.
The military said there was no need to use force during the mission and that the jets have since returned to their home base.
A Russian attack on a farm in a village in Ukraine's northern Kharkiv region early on Thursday killed six people, the regional governor said.
A further eight farm workers were injured in the attack, Oleh Syniehubov said on the Telegram messaging app.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called for a full and immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, starting in the Black Sea, to safeguard grain and food supplies.
“Ukraine had a very good grain harvest this year. But because of the Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports, it can't be delivered to the world. Russia is thereby exacerbating hunger and starvation worldwide,” he said in a statement published on Thursday.
The Polish Air Force has again conducted preventive operations related to Russian missile attacks on Ukraine, the Polish Army said in a post on social media website X on Thursday morning.

A fire has broken out on the premises of an industrial facility in Russia's Krasnodar region as result of falling drone debris, local authorities said on Thursday.
No one was injured, and the fire is being extinguished, they said.
Russian forces hit Ukrainian defence facilities, logistics and telecommunication centres and vessels used by the military in overnight strikes, the Russian defence ministry said.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko dispatched emergency crews to a district outside the city centre early on Thursday after a new round of explosions hit the capital, the mayor said on Telegram.
Russian forces had maintained attacks on the city through most of Wednesday, killing two people and injuring 45, according to Klitschko.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan told Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy that attacks by Russia and Ukraine on commercial vessels in the Black Sea were inexplicable and steps must be taken to stop these, according to a readout from his office on Thursday.
“During the meeting, Erdoğan stated that Türkiye was ready to do all it can for the Ukraine-Russia war to end with lasting peace, that we will continue our efforts to revive direct negotiations,” the Turkish presidency said in a statement.
Ukraine has transferred two North Korean prisoners of war to South Korea, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an address to the United Nations General Assembly.
“These guys are not easy to capture alive. One of them, when he realised he was going to be taken prisoner, tried to kill himself. And he was shocked that fate did not let him die,” said Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy did not provide more details about the return. Ukraine captured the two North Koreans in Russia's Kursk region in January last year.
Debris fell across three districts, damaging a maternity hospital, clinic, residential building and private homes. Three of the injured were medical workers, with two people reported to be in serious condition.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes and called for stronger sanctions against Russia and more air defence systems.
Overnight strikes also damaged residential, medical and educational facilities in the Black Sea port of Odesa.
